This dvd features a Williams system 3-11 board
test fixture built by Ed Cheung, an employee at NASA.
Later in the program we see Ed’s fully restored Space
Shuttle, featuring a playfield which he clearcoated.
Systems 3-11 included a wide range of games, ranging from World
Cup to Monster Bash, and even a couple of redemption games, like
Ticket Tac Toe and a few puck bowlers, like Alley Cats.
Ed demonstrates the test fixture, featuring a microprocessor
which he programmed himself. The
fixture can diagnose the lamp matrix, among other components of the
CPU. The fixture features
a score display emulator, with a built in voltmeter. Ed points out the
strobes which control the data lines to the display.
He also demonstrates the sound diagnostics and mentions high
voltage display troubleshooting. Then he demonstrates how to test a
CPU board, showing which switches represent the coin door, the
solenoids, and switch tests. Ed points out sections of the MPU board,
including the lamp matrix section, the solenoid driver section, the
CPU core, and the audio section, including the audio amp. The second half of the dvd shows Ed’s Space
Shuttle pin which he clearcoated himself.
Ed shares some playfield restoration tips, such as
strengthening the Space Shuttle’s wings, and we get to see the
boards inside the game and get a couple of restoration tips there too,
such as replacing the old ni cad with a remote battery pack to protect
the CPU against corrosion, added fuse modifications to protect the
power supply and even properly grounding a CPU. Ed also touches on the history of some of the
playfield art and some playfield restoration tips.
We also take a look at the famous Space Shuttle coffee table! For more information on this test fixture, click
